Waves Slam You Into the Rock

January 19, 2017

"I've learned to kiss the wave that slammed me into the rock."

-Charles Spurgeon

Nope.  Not me.  Uh Uh.  I've felt that before.

Last year, Fred (the hubs) and I visited Mexico. I live for the ocean and beach...yet somehow live in the exact middle of the US.  Fix it Jesus! ;) I was so excited to jump right into the ocean that immediately upon arrival at the resort, I ran straight to the beach.  As I nestled my feet in the sand in knee deep turquoise waters, I stood in awe.  It was everything I dreamed it would be.

**Enter biggest wave ever Stage Left**

On my hands and knees, now scraped up from sand and rock, I get my head above the water just long enough to see another wave towering over me.  With a mouth and nose filled with salt water, I wondered for a split second "Am I going to drown??"

As I got up mad, bloody, coughing, I snapped "I don't even want to swim anymore.  I'm going to the pool"...where it's calm and small and the environment is controlled...

I looked back only long enough to see Fred-out in the middle of the ocean just jumping and laughing carelessly.  Hmph.

Our walk with God is at times just like this.  We see the glory.  We step in.  Maybe just an inch or two.  Then out of no where the wave hits.  Hits our mind.  Finances.  Marriage.  Home.  Children.  Then before we can gasp for a breath while knocked down, another wave.  Hits our plans.  Our visions.  Our hopes.

THANK YOU WAVES.

Yes, you read that right.  I've learned (ok-still learning) to be thankful for the waves.  You should be too.

Waves teach us two things about our Good Good Father:

1.  They slam us into the Rock (Jesus)

"Truly He is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress,

I will never be shaken"

Psalm 62:2

Waves have the power to pick up people, huge boats, objects and toss them where they want.  They even form the shape of coastlines.  Yet, ROCKS that are resistant to erosion jut into the ocean and force the waves to bend around THEM!

The waves you are fighting against are actually projecting you to the safe, unmovable Rock, Jesus.  These waves may totally change you, move you to a completely different location, even hurt.  But sometimes, in our "Oh, I've got this" mindset, it's the only way we will get to Him.

"From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint: lead me to the rock that is higher than I"

Psalm 61:2

And once you arrive, you climb up on that Rock and just breathe.  Protected.  By the one who can tell the waves "Quiet! Be still!" Mark 4:39

2.  If we are willing to fight through those waves, we will find that calm and peaceful place.

Just like my husband, who after taking a deep breath and pushing past the waves, was out there without a care in the world enjoying the stillness of the water.

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you: and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you"

Isaiah 43:2

GOD PROMISED.

Will you pray with me?

Father,

I thank you for the waves in my life.  I thank you that they have led me to you.  My refuge. My strong tower.  The Rock that is higher than I.  Show yourself mighty when the waves catch me off guard and knock me to my knees.  This simply positions me to pray and submit to you.  Thank you for allowing me to climb up on your lap and rest when it all becomes too much.  Show me when it's time to rest and when it's time to swim with all my strength.  Help me to remember that I will pass through the waters, and that you are with me.  Let me not get mad and quit and go back to what's comfortable and predictable.  Shape me.  Move me.  And when I reach that place of stillness, let me tell everyone just how I got there-my ROCK.

In Jesus name,

Amen.
